The Parable of the Trapeze: Letting Go to Move Forward

May 27, 20252 min read

There’s a powerful image that I often return to — the parable of the trapeze. It goes like this: when a trapeze artist is flying through the air, they cannot grab onto the next bar until they let go of the one they’re currently holding. It’s simple. Obvious, even. But it’s also one of the most profound truths when it comes to change, growth, and reaching our goals.

So many times in life, I’ve been reminded of this. When we cling tightly to the past — whether it’s an identity, a job, a relationship, or an outdated version of ourselves — we block the path forward. We want change. We desire something new. But we’re scared to let go of the familiar, even when it no longer serves us.

Imagine a trapeze artist swinging back and forth — and just ahead of them, a new bar of opportunity is within reach. But fear keeps them frozen. That moment of hesitation? That’s where so many of us live. We stay stuck in “what we know,” even when it’s uncomfortable, even painful, because the unknown feels scarier.

There’s a saying I love: “The shit is warm, so we stay in it.” Crude? Yes. But real. Familiar discomfort can feel safer than unfamiliar freedom. That’s the paradox. But the truth is this — staying stuck keeps us from flying forward.

The magic only happens in the space between — when we trust ourselves enough to let go before we can fully grasp what’s next.

I want to encourage you today: trust yourself. Trust your inner wisdom. Trust your faith. The bar swinging toward you holds more than you can imagine — new purpose, peace, fulfillment, joy, abundance. But you won’t experience any of it until you release your grip on the old bar.

Just reach out and let go…

If this resonates with you, if you’re standing on that edge and feel the pull of what’s next but aren’t sure how to move — I see you. And I can help you navigate the transition.
